Indiana prides itself as being the "crossroads of America", and provides many options for
transportation within its borders. The Hoosier state is crossed by several interstates and state
highways. Among the major interstate highways are I-64, I-65, I-69, I-74, I-275, I-80, I-90, and
I-94, in addition to related bypasses.
Air travel in Indiana is serviced primarily by Indianapolis International Airport (IND), which serves over 8.5 million passengers
annually. Other important airports include the Gary Chicago International Airport (GYY) in Gary, close to downtown Chicago,
Illinois; Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA),
serving over 650,000 passengers annually; the South
Bend Regional Airport; and Evansville
Regional Airport (EVV).
Commuters have a wealth of options within the Hoosier state. The Indianapolis Public Transit
Corporation operates IndyGo, which carries nearly
9 million passengers annually over 28 routes with 130 vehicles for fixed route service. CityBus represents the main public
transit provider for the greater Lafayette area, operating 67 buses carrying over 4 million passengers
annually. The Gary Public Transit Corporation
operates 13 routes within the Gary area.
Amtrak serves Indiana with the Cardinal/Hoosier State route, connecting New York and Chicago with stops in
Indianapolis. Other Amtrak routes with stops in Indiana include the Michigan Services route and the Capitol Limited route. Additional rail services in the Hoosier State include the
South Shore Line, a commuter rail system operated by the Northern Indiana Transportation District, which serves northwest Indiana by
connecting South Bend to Chicago. Railroads in Indiana are operated primarily under CSX Transportation, Inc. and Norfolk Southern.
Shipping by water contributes to industry in Indiana, whether by the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway
or the Inland Waterway System. Ports
of Indiana operates three ports: Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor, on the south shore of Lake
Michigan, the most efficient deep-water port on the Great Lakes; the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville,
located on the northern bank of the Ohio River; and the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon located on the
Ohio River west of Evansville.
Bus lines serving Indiana include Cardinal
Buses, Inc. and Greyhound Lines, which
offers stops throughout the Hoosier State.
