Indiana prides itself for its remarkable educational opportunities for all ages. For school-aged
children, school is compulsory from ages 7 to 18. Children may attend public or private schools, or
be home-schooled.
Indiana is known for its prestigious universities. Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington enrolls approximately 98,000 students across
eight campuses, and offers over 900 degree programs across all campuses. IU also boasts more than 150
research centers and institutes, and has an endowment of over $1 billion. Founded in 1869,
Purdue University in West Lafayette enrolls over
69,000 students and offers over 500 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate fields of study.
The University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame is a
national Catholic university consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the nation. The
university enrolls over 11,000 students and offers four undergraduate colleges, 10 major research
institutes, and over 40 centers and special programs. Its Graduate School encompasses 43 master’s and
22 doctoral degree programs, and 28 University departments and institutes.
Indiana offers several private institutions for education. Ball State University in Muncie is a four-year, private, non-sectarian college of
engineering, science, and mathematics. DePauw
University in Greencastle is a private, undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and School of
Music. Butler University in Indianapolis is a
private university encompassing five colleges and emphasizing a liberal arts education. Valparaiso University is a private university in
Valparaiso enrolling approximately 4,000 students in over 70 fields of study in five colleges.
