About the Position
Zymeworks is seeking a Senior Director of Immune Oncology to provide scientific, organizational and program leadership to advance our growing oncology pipeline. She or he will lead an oncology research department and collaborate with cross-functional subject matter experts, project teams and functional area heads to develop novel protein therapeutics utilizing innovative platforms developed at Zymeworks.
This position will report to the Head of Research and will be based in either Vancouver, BC or Seattle, WA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leads a talented team of Oncology researchers to deliver an innovative and sustainable pipeline in Oncology, across a diversity of modalities, from inception through IND in solid tumors and hematological malignancies.
- Develops and refines oncology portfolio strategy and sets departmental scientific and pipeline goals and efficiently delivers through managing research, people and resources.
- Guides department staff and project teams to develop scientific blueprints that define key project go/no-go decision points and resources projects according to department and portfolio priorities.
- Coordinates cross-departmental activities to ensure strategic alignment, resource efficiency and timely delivery.
- Makes research and program decisions in consultation with key senior leaders to advance research projects from target selection to IND.
- Supports the evaluation and review of project plan and data and serves as an Oncology representative in scientific governance bodies.
- Keeps up to date with latest development in oncology, immune oncology (e.g. T cell, macrophage and NK biology, etc.), therapeutic modalities (e.g. T cell engagers, antibody drug conjugates, regulated biologics, multi-functional biologics, etc.), and competitive landscape.
- Expands the cutting-edge expertise and the breadth/depth of knowledge in oncology and Immune Oncology research and biologic drug development within the department and across the discovery organization.
- Provides day-to-day scientific and organizational leadership for the department. Mentors and develops talent, providing performance feedback, training opportunities, and exposure to new assignments.
- Develop a science-driven and goal-oriented research culture that values innovation, risk-taking, teamwork and efficient delivery.
- Evaluates preclinical/clinical-stage in-licensing and collaboration opportunities.
- Ensures the success of key external collaborations by developing focused research plan and providing appropriate collaborative support.
Qualifications and Education
- PhD with +12 years of directly relevant biotech/pharmaceutical industry experience in immune oncology and/or immunology.
- Proven track record of scientific innovation and accomplishment as evidenced by publications, patents, conference presentations, and IND submissions.
- Deep research expertise and extensive working experience in T cell, macrophage, and/or NK biology.
- Broad biologic drug discovery experience in immune oncology and/or immunology with a track record of advancing novel research programs from target discovery to IND.
- Well informed in oncology diseases, treatment landscape and therapeutic research/development trends.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- Strong motivation, attention to detail, and ability to think independently and fully integrate into a high achieving team environment.
- Proven history of building relationships and fostering engagement and alignment across cross-functional stakeholders.
- Excellent management and leadership skills and the ability to mentor and develop strong contributors. A track record of inspiring and aligning organizations around goals and contributing as an active role model in company values.
- Ability to address complex scientific problems with practical research plan and efficiently execute and deliver. Ability to learn fast and change course quickly where indicated.
- Ability to work independently and effectively on multiple programs and also collaboratively and productively in a dynamic team environment.
- A self-starter with strong scientific curiosity, creativity, and rigor, excellent analytic skills and high ethical standards. A skilled leader who embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation, encourages risk-taking, and effectively manages innovation to reality.
